Where to next..?

As it was an anniversary year we decided to make the journey back towards Normandy to witness the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Luckily we had completed this journey last year and had already visited the main ‘tourist’ areas, as now every town was filled with visitors from all around the globe. It was an amazing sight to travel the roads that many had gone before and be part of the congregation who came to witness the commemorative anniversary. The last of an age of veterans brough a sombre tone to the celebrations as we watched living history recount tales of a times past.

Utah Beach in Normandy, holds a significant place in history as one of the D-Day landing sites during World War II. As you step onto the soft sands, the serene beauty of the beach contrasts with the harrowing events that unfolded there eight decades ago.
The remains of the original harbour and German bunkers stand as silent witnesses to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought here.
Utah Beach provides a sombre yet essential opportunity for reflection, honouring the memory of those who participated in one of the most pivotal moments of World War II. Whether you are a history enthusiast (like us) or simply wish to pay your respects, a visit to Utah Beach is a humbling and unforgettable experience. Travelling on to Omaha, Juno and Sword beaches is an experience in itself with many opportunities around to learn the facts of a times past. The various dedicated war museums dotted along the coast gave ample choice for the visiting historian to reflect.

Where to visit in Normandy?

  1. Bayeux: Known for the famous Bayeux Tapestry, this town offers a glimpse into the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.

  2. Caen: Home to the stunning Château de Caen and the Abbaye-aux-Hommes, where William the Conqueror is buried, Caen is a treasure trove of medieval history.

  3. Rouen: With its well-preserved medieval architecture and connections to figures like Joan of Arc, Rouen is a captivating town steeped in history.

  4. Honfleur: A picturesque port town with a rich maritime history, Honfleur's cobblestone streets and charming buildings harken back to its prosperous past.

  5. Mont-Saint-Michel: While technically not a town, this iconic island commune is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, with its medieval abbey and strategic significance throughout the centuries.

Best War Museums in Normandy

  1. Mémorial de Caen The Mémorial de Caen offers a comprehensive look at World War II, including its causes and consequences. The museum features exhibits on D-Day, the Battle of Normandy, and the Cold War.

  2. Musée Mémorial d'Omaha Beach Situated near the famous landing site, this museum focuses on the American perspective of D-Day. Visitors can explore artifacts, personal stories, and a variety of exhibits detailing the events of June 6, 1944.

  3. Airborne Museum Located in Sainte-Mère-Église, this museum pays tribute to the paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. Interactive displays, original equipment, and life-sized dioramas provide a glimpse into the airborne operations of D-Day.

  4. Musée du Débarquement Utah Beach This museum showcases the American landing at Utah Beach on D-Day. Visitors can view tanks, vehicles, and a B26 bomber on display, as well as learn about the challenges and triumphs of the Allied forces.

  5. Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial While not a traditional museum, this site in Colleville-sur-Mer is a poignant tribute to the American soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Normandy campaign. The serene grounds overlook Omaha Beach and offer a somber reminder of the cost of war.
