“France is the most civilized country in the world and doesn’t care who knows it” – John Gunther

Utah Beach in Normandy, France holds a significant place in history as one of the D-Day landing sites during World War II. As you step onto the soft sands, the serene beauty of the beach contrasts with the harrowing events that unfolded there eight decades ago.

The remains of the original harbour and German bunkers stand as silent witnesses to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought here.
Utah Beach provides a sombre yet essential opportunity for reflection, honouring the memory of those who participated in one of the most pivotal moments of World War II. Whether you are a history enthusiast (like us) or simply wish to pay your respects, a visit to Utah Beach is a humbling and unforgettable experience.

Travelling on to Omaha, Juno and Sword beaches is an experience in itself with many opportunities around to learn the facts of a times past. The various dedicated war museums dotted along the coast gave ample choice for the visiting historian to reflect.

These images reflect moments captured during the 80th commemorative anniversary in June 2024.
